Rantemario is the highest mountain in Sulawesi. Located in Latimojong Range, in the south of the Tana Toraja region, in the southwest of Sulawesi. The top is a rather flat area (“rante” = flat, “mario” = silent). Rantemario, unlike most other Indonesian mountains, is not a volcano. It is not too far from the road from Makassar to Rantepao – part of the “beaten path” for visitors to Sulawesi – but getting to the mountain is rather difficult. Rantemario is not very well known and not often visited

Climbing is a steep journey through the mountain rainforest, which feels changing with height. This line is divided into 8 parts. After each section there is a small clearing marked with a sign, called “post”. There are 8 “posts” at all, “Post 8” becomes the peak. The walking distance between two “posts” is 30 to 60 minutes. The journey is not difficult, it is also not dangerous, even though “Post 2” and “Post 3” are partly slippery, especially in wet conditions. Climbing from the starting point (1,450 m) upwards requires 7 to 8 hours. The difference in height is 1,99 m.

Try to be at the peak at sunrise, not only experience a beautiful sunrise but also have the best chance to get a clear view. Then that view will soon be blocked by clouds coming from the rainforest. You can camp at “Post 7” and walk up before sunrise (See below).

Trekking to Rantemario

Map of South Sulawesi You can arrange trips to Rantemario in Makassar (formerly Ujung Pandang), Makale or Rantepao. Then go to Baraka through Kalosi (the last one lying on the road from Makassar to Rantepao). There is a transportation service. From Baraka you have to take a 4WD vehicle to the village of Rantelemo. There are no scheduled services. You have to wonder for the car. The trip takes 2 to 3 hours. In Rantelemo, the dirt road ends and you have to walk for another 2.5 hours to Karangan (1,450 m), the last village, where you will find a path. The owner of one of the houses at the top of the village provides accommodation Sulawesi travel agent .

Camping in Sulawesi’s Rantemario

Camping in Rantemario There is no shelter, not even a wooden stage with a roof on the stage found at the “post” of some other Indonesian mountains, for example Klabat and Rinjani. You can install tents at each “post” including the summit (mountain health is rather flat), but drinking water is available only in “Post 2” and “Pos 7”. At “Post 5” you can get it, but from afar. “Pos 7” (3,194 m) is a suitable place to build a base camp. Sulawesi trekking The last climb to the top is easy and takes 30 to 45 minutes.
